Tutorial

Title:

Evolvable Hardware Applications

Authors:

Tetsuya Higuchi

Abstract:

This tutorial briefly reviews the industrial applications of evolvable hardware which is a new hardware paradigm enabling autonomous hardware reconfiguration. Evolvable hardware is the integration of evolutionary algorithms such as genetic algorithms and reconfigurable hardware devices such as PLD(Programmable Logic Device) and FPGA. After the introduction of basic concepts of evolvable hardware, industrial applications based on evolvable hardware are explained. The applications introduced in the tutorial cover myoelectric hand controller, image data compression(ISO accepted), femto-laser systems and various semiconductor applications including clock timing adjustment applied to Giga-Hertz LSI and commercial microprocessors, high-speed data transmission (USB, IEEE1394, and 2Ghz FPGA), and analog evolvable hardware used in the cellular phones.
