We present an agent-based, 3D model of the lactose (lac) operon, a gene regulatory system in the bacterium E. coli. The lac operon is a prime example of a _real genetic programming_ system, which has been studied extensively and lends itself to rigorous mathematical analysis and computational simulations. We suggest natural gene regulatory systems, as observed within E. coli, to serve as testbeds for future in silico genetic programming systems.",
