abstract = "This chapter describes how introducing locality into
the Genetic Programming Paradigm (GP) influences the
evolutionary behaviour of both the population as a
whole and its individual members. We have adopted an
Artificial Life (ALife) viewpoint -- focusing more on
the population as a whole rather than on individual
performance-- for our observations of an illustrative
system that uses this approach. We introduce locality
into the GP in both the reproductive and evaluation
phases. Our implementation of locality uses isolation
by distance - on a linear population with wraparound -
as opposed to the more commonly used fixed-sized
demes.",
