abstract = "Database query optimization is a hard research
problem. Exhaustive techniques are adequate for trivial
instances only, while combinatorial optimization
techniques are vulnerable to the peculiarities of
specific instances. We propose a model based on genetic
programming to address this problem, motivated by its
robustness and efficiency in a wide area of search
problems. We adapt the genetic programming paradigm to
the requirements of the query optimization problem,
showing that the nature of the problem makes genetic
programming a particularly attractive approach to it.",
