This paper describes the optimization of a constrained feed network for an antenna array using two genetic algorithm (GA) techniques. Specifically, a simple genetic algorithm (SGA) and a hierarchical Bayesian optimization algorithm (hBOA) are adopted to solve this problem. Three different objective functions are designed to compare the performance of the two algorithms. The first objective function is designed to be GA-easy but does not completely capture the true objectives of the problem. Here, we see comparable performance between the SGA and hBOA. The remaining two cost functions are GA-difficult but are much more relevant to the problem objectives. In these cases, we see that hBOA significantly outperforms the SGA. Overall, this project demonstrates the utility of using advanced GA techniques to obtain acceptable/enhanced solution quality. |
