Systems biology aims at understanding biological phenomena on a systems level. This approach is based on large scale measurements of biological parameters such as gene expression or protein-protein interactions. In the analysis of such data sets a variety of complex optimization problems need to be addressed. In several cases evolutionary algorithms have been successfully applied to the analysis of large scale biological data sets. This tutorial gives an introduction to systems biology in general and to the application of evolutionary algorithms within systems biology. In a first part the different types of biological data gathered in large scale measurements and the underlying biological motivation are presented. In a second part the tutorial addresses the typical optimization problems that arise in this context and discusses existing examples for the application of evolutionary algorithms to these problems.
