abstract = "We applied an evolutionary-based genetic programming
model to improve the accuracy of maximum wave setup
predictions. To develop the algorithm, we used a
previously published well-known dataset representing a
variety of beach and wave conditions. As a result, we
present ten new empirical predictors of wave setup and
propose using an ensemble model of the top five and ten
new empirical equations. All new predictors outperform
the ones in the literature, with the model ensembles
presenting an even better fit than the individual
parametrizations to the testing data. Genetic
programming models and the use of ensemble predictions
are capable of providing some physical insights and
increase the predictive capability.",
