abstract = "Smart systems can be appropriately coordinated in
industries to monitor and control the performance of
wastewater treatment plants to regulate their pollutant
discharge levels. Laboratory scale aerobic bioreactor
was used in continuous treatment of toxic pollutants
such as phenol, o-cresol, m-xylenol, quinoline, indole
and cyanide representing wastewater from coal
processing and steel manufacturing industries. This
study models the treatment behavior of aerobic
bioreactor in degradation of phenol and cyanide in
presence of other toxic pollutants using Genetic
Programming (GP). The root mean squares of error (RMSE)
of GP run models from aerobic reactor treating cyanide
was found to be 1.89; whereas those for phenol removal
was 2.84. It was also found that hydraulic retention
time played an important factor in increasing the
efficiency of the treatment system. The GP based models
highlights the detrimental effect of cyanide on
microbial population while the positive influence of
quinoline in removal of phenol from the bioreactor was
brought upon from the model equation. The GP results
were compared with those of Artificial Neural Networks
(ANN). The outcomes show that GP is a more encouraging
tool especially when modeling the treatment behavior of
biological systems for toxic pollutants.",
