abstract = "In this paper we show that evolutionary pressure
towards stable solutions has a significant impact on
the evolutionary process. More stable solutions are
less likely to be degraded by variation operators such
as crossover and mutation. In particular, our results
show that the pressure towards stable solutions has a
significant influence on the evolutionary selection of
terminals in genetic programming. We solve the same
problem using a genetic algorithm with a linear
encoding. We observe similar effects with the GA
showing that the behavior translates to a variety of
evolutionary paradigms.",
